Amarie Gist headshot“Relationships are based on four principles—respect, understanding, acceptance, and appreciation.” – Mahatma Gandhi

When I first read this quote, I thought about how relationships influence nearly every aspect of our lives. Whether in our personal lives, classrooms, or workplaces, strong relationships are built when people feel respected, understood, accepted, and appreciated. These principles create environments where individuals feel comfortable being themselves, sharing ideas, and growing.

As I reflect on my first few weeks at the Arras Foundation, I can confidently say that these principles are reflected throughout the organization. From the moment I arrived, I felt welcomed and valued. Everyone has been willing to answer questions, share their experiences, and encourage me to contribute my own ideas. Even as an intern, I feel that my perspective is important and appreciated.

One thing that I appreciate about the Arras Foundation is its culture of collaboration. People listen to one another, respect different viewpoints, and work together toward a common goal. This has created an environment where I feel comfortable stepping outside of my comfort zone. As someone who is naturally introverted, entering a new workplace can be intimidating. The positive atmosphere at Arras, however, has encouraged me to ask questions, participate in discussions, and engage in projects with confidence.

The relationships I have created with the Arras team members have already played an important role in my internship experience. They have influenced my willingness to push my limits, share ideas, and embrace new opportunities to learn. More importantly, they make me excited to come to work each day. I always leave the office having learned something new – whether it’s a professional skill, a new perspective, or a lesson that I can apply to my personal life.

The time I’ve spent at the Arras Foundation has already shown me that strong relationships are not just important – they are essential. When people feel respected, understood, accepted, and appreciated, they are empowered to grow, contribute, and succeed.
