During my internship at the Arras Foundation, I have spent time researching and learning more about Generation Z through a project called What’s Going on With Gen Z? I have also been interviewing community stakeholders to learn about the resources and opportunities they provide for young adults. As a Gen Z-er myself, this project has been both exciting and eye-opening. While I expected to learn more about my peers, I did not expect to learn so much about myself and the communities around me in the process.

What I have found most interesting is the diversity of Gen Z’s experiences, values, and needs. Gen Z is often described as being digitally connected, socially aware, and eager to make a difference. Many young people, however, are also navigating challenges related to mental health, career uncertainty, financial pressures, and finding a sense of belonging.
As I conduct research, I am finding resources, programs, and opportunities that I did not know existed. Though I am a researcher, I am also part of the audience these resources are intended to serve. It made me realize that sometimes the biggest challenge is not the lack of resources—it is a lack of awareness. If I didn’t know about some of these opportunities, there are likely many others who don’t know about them either.
What excites me most about this project is the potential to bridge that gap in awareness. I enjoy learning information that can help people, and I find it rewarding to share that knowledge with others. Whether someone is younger than me, older than me, or in the same stage of life, I believe information becomes most valuable when it is used to support and empower others.
As a big believer in full-circle moments, I am finding a deeper personal meaning in this project, as well. Throughout my life, there have been people who have invested their time, knowledge, and support in helping me grow. Now, through this project, I have the opportunity to do the same for others. The information I am learning today could help connect someone to a resource, opportunity, or support system that positively impacts their future.
As I continue this project, I am excited to learn more, challenge assumptions, and help connect Gen Z to the resources designed to help them thrive. My biggest takeaway so far is that understanding a generation is not just about studying data—it is about listening, learning, and finding ways to turn knowledge into action.
